Welcome, tactician, to the continent of Elibe! Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, known simply as Fire Emblem in its original Western release, was the first game in the series to grace international shores on the Game Boy Advance (GBA). It serves as a prequel to the Japan-only Fire Emblem: Binding Blade, starring Roy, and alongside Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones, it represents the golden era of Fire Emblem GBA games. This timeless classic is renowned for its compelling story, memorable cast of Fire Emblem characters, and perfectly balanced tactical gameplay.
Whether you're a first-time player drawn in by the series' modern entries or a returning veteran seeking a refresher, this comprehensive Fire Emblem Blazing Blade walkthrough will guide you through every chapter. We'll cover recruitment, key strategies, hidden items, and crucial tips to help you lead Lyn, Eliwood, and Hector to victory.
Getting Started: Key Concepts and Game Modes
Before diving into the campaign, let's cover some fundamental mechanics that will be critical to your success.
The Weapon Triangle
The core of Fire Emblem's combat is the Fire Emblem weapon triangle. It's a simple rock-paper-scissors system:
- Swords beat Axes
- Axes beat Lances
- Lances beat Swords
A unit with a weapon advantage gains +1 damage and +15 hit rate, while the disadvantaged unit suffers a -1 damage and -15 hit rate penalty. Always use this to your advantage.
The Magic Trinity
Magic follows a similar principle, known as the Trinity of Magic:
- Anima (Fire, Thunder, Wind) beats Light
- Light beats Dark
- Dark beats Anima
These matchups provide the same +1 damage and +15 hit bonuses and penalties.
Growth Rates and Permadeath
A defining feature of the series is permadeath. If a unit's HP drops to zero, they are gone for good (in classic mode). This makes every decision critical. Each character has unique Fire Emblem growth rates, which are the percentage chances for each stat to increase upon leveling up. A character with a 70% strength growth is far more likely to gain strength than one with a 20% growth. Wise use of your most promising units is key.
Game Modes: Lyn, Eliwood, and Hector
Blazing Blade is unique in its structure. Your first playthrough is Lyn's Tale, a 10-chapter tutorial that introduces the core mechanics and characters. Upon completion, you unlock Eliwood's Tale, the main story. Finishing Eliwood's Tale unlocks Hector's Tale, which retells the main story from Hector's perspective, featuring different chapters, new recruitable characters, and a higher difficulty.
This walkthrough will cover all three modes. Let's begin our journey.
Part 1: Lyn's Tale (Tutorial)
Lyn's Tale is a fantastic introduction to the world and mechanics of Fire Emblem. It's relatively low-stakes and designed to teach you everything you need to know.
Prologue: A Girl from the Plains
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- New Units: Lyn
- Strategy: This is as simple as it gets. Move Lyn towards the lone Brigand, Batta. The game will guide you through attacking. Use the forest tiles for an evasion and defense boost. Heal with a Vulnerary if needed, then defeat him and seize the gate.
Chapter 1: Footsteps of Fate
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- New Units: Sain, Kent
- Strategy: You now have two Cavaliers, Sain and Kent. They introduce the concept of the Fire Emblem weapon triangle. Kent (Sword) has an advantage against the Axe-wielding Brigands, while Sain (Lance) is at a disadvantage. Use Kent to lead the charge and Sain to finish off weakened enemies. Keep Lyn safe and move everyone towards the boss, Zugu. Surround and defeat him, then have Lyn seize.
Chapter 2: The Sword of Spirits
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- New Units: None
- Strategy: This map introduces varied terrain. Use forests for cover. The boss, Glass, wields a powerful Hand Axe. Lure him into attacking one of your units from a distance, then swarm him on your turn. Kent is your best bet against him due to his sword.
Chapter 3: Band of Mercenaries
- Objective: Seize the Throne
- New Units: Florina (Pegasus Knight), Wil (Archer)
- Recruitment: Talk to Florina with Lyn to recruit her. Wil joins automatically.
- Strategy: Florina is your first flying unit, giving her incredible mobility. However, she is extremely weak to archers, so keep her far away from them. Wil is your first Archer, perfect for attacking from a distance. Use Florina to visit the village for a Javelin. Advance cautiously, using Wil to soften up targets for your other units to finish.
Chapter 4: In Occupation's Shadow
- Objective: Seize the Throne
- New Units: Dorcas (Fighter)
- Recruitment: Talk to Dorcas with Lyn.
- Strategy: Dorcas starts as an enemy but will not attack you. Move Lyn to him immediately to recruit him. This map introduces Thieves, who can pilfer villages. Use Florina's high movement to quickly visit the northern village before the Thief can destroy it. The boss, Carjiga, is another Axe-user, making Kent and Lyn your best options.
Chapter 5: Beyond the Borders
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- New Units: Serra (Cleric), Erk (Mage)
- Recruitment: Talk to Erk with Serra.
- Strategy: Erk starts as a neutral unit fighting the Brigands. Move Serra into his range and talk to him to recruit him. Serra is your first healer; protect her at all costs. Erk is your first magic user, capable of targeting the weaker Resistance stat of most physical enemies. Use his magical prowess to clear a path.
Chapter 6: Blood of Pride
- Objective: Defeat all enemies
- New Units: Rath (Nomad), Matthew (Thief)
- Recruitment: Rath joins automatically at the start. Talk to Matthew with Lyn.
- Strategy: Matthew, your Thief, starts near the boss. Don't let him get killed! Move your main group north to help him. Rath is a powerful mounted archer who can move after attacking, a skill called Canto. Use him to pick off enemies safely. This is a "Fog of War" map, meaning your vision is limited. Thieves like Matthew have a wider sight range. Move slowly and let enemies come to you.
Chapter 7: Siblings Abroad
- Objective: Seize the Throne
- New Units: Nils (Bard), Lucius (Monk)
- Recruitment: Lucius joins automatically. Talk to the neutral Priest, Renault, with Nils (this is a secret, he doesn't join yet but it's required for a side quest later).
- Strategy: Nils is a Bard. His "Play" ability allows a unit who has already acted to take another turn. This is incredibly powerful. You can have a strong unit attack twice, or have Serra heal twice. Lucius uses Light magic, which is effective against the Dark Mage boss, Heintz. Protect Nils and Serra, and use your new units to push forward. Visit the villages for an Iron Blade and a Pure Water.
Chapter 7x: The Black Shadow (Side Chapter)
- Requirement: Visit the top-left village in Chapter 7.
- Objective: Defeat the boss (Beyard)
- New Units: Wallace (Knight)
- Strategy: Wallace joins as a high-level prepromote. He's a powerful defensive wall. This map is straightforward. Use Wallace to block the narrow passages and let him absorb most of the damage. Use your other units to support him and clear out the remaining foes.
Chapter 8: Vortex of Strategy
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- New Units: None
- Strategy: This map introduces Ballistae, long-range siege weapons that are devastating to fliers. Keep Florina grounded or far out of their range. The boss, Yogi, is on one. You can either rush him with your ground units or use a high-resistance unit like Erk or Lucius to bait his shots while others advance.
Chapter 9: A Grim Reunion
- Objective: Seize the Throne
- New Units: None
- Strategy: A straightforward castle map. The main threat is Eagler, the boss, who is a powerful Paladin. He is tough to take down. Use your strongest units, especially those with high defense like Kent or Wallace, to fight him. Use the Fire Emblem weapon triangle to your advantage; an Axeman like Dorcas will do well.
Chapter 10: The Distant Plains
- Objective: Survive for 11 turns
- New Units: None
- Strategy: This is a defense map. You don't need to defeat every enemy, just survive. The boss, Lundgren, will not move until the later turns. Form a defensive perimeter around your weaker units like Serra and Nils. Use the forts for healing and defensive bonuses. Once Lundgren starts moving, converge on him with your strongest units (Lyn, Kent, Sain, Wallace) to end the chapter early.
With Lundgren's defeat, Lyn's Tale concludes. You'll now move on to the main story.
Part 2: Eliwood's Tale
Eliwood's story is the heart of Fire Emblem: Blazing Blade. The difficulty ramps up, and you'll manage a much larger army.
Chapter 11: Taking Leave
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- New Units: Eliwood (Lord), Marcus (Paladin), Lowen (Cavalier), Rebecca (Archer), Bartre (Fighter), Dorcas (from Lyn's mode)
- Strategy: You're introduced to a new cast. Marcus is a "Jagen" archetype—a powerful prepromoted unit who gains very little experience. Use him to weaken enemies or handle emergencies, but try to feed kills to your lower-level units. Lowen is another solid Cavalier. Bartre is a Fighter with high HP and Strength. Position your units carefully and advance.
Chapter 12: Birds of a Feather
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- New Units: Hector (Lord), Oswin (Knight)
- Strategy: Hector and Oswin start in the north. They can handle themselves for a few turns. Move Eliwood's group up to meet them. The boss, Zagan, won't move. Use Hector's Wolf Beil axe, which is effective against armored units like Knights and Generals, to deal massive damage.
Chapter 13: In Search of an Answer
- Objective: Seize the Throne
- New Units: Serra (from Lyn's mode), Matthew (from Lyn's mode)
- Strategy: This map has several chests. You must bring Matthew to open them. Protect him as he moves towards the treasure. The enemies are mostly mercenaries; use the weapon triangle to your advantage. The boss, Boies, is a powerful Knight, but Hector's Wolf Beil will make short work of him.
Chapter 13x: The Peddler of Death (Side Chapter)
- Requirement: Visit the village in the top-left of Chapter 13.
- Objective: Defeat all enemies
- Strategy: A foggy map filled with Assassins. Bring Matthew for his superior vision. The enemies here are powerful but frail. Move as a group and don't overextend. The boss is an Assassin who can inflict a one-hit KO with his Silencer skill. Attack him with multiple units in one turn to avoid giving him a chance to retaliate.
Chapter 14: False Friends
- Objective: Seize the Throne
- New Units: Guy (Myrmidon)
- Recruitment: Talk to Guy with Matthew.
- Strategy: Guy is a powerful Myrmidon who starts as an enemy. He won't attack Matthew, so move Matthew into his range to recruit him. This map is a large castle with two paths. It's best to stick to one path to keep your forces concentrated. The boss, Erik, is on a throne that provides significant defensive bonuses and healing. Use your strongest attackers like Hector and Guy to overwhelm him.
Chapter 15: Talons Alight
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- New Units: Merlinus (Transporter), Priscilla (Troubadour)
- Recruitment: Visit the southern village with Eliwood to recruit Priscilla. Merlinus joins automatically.
- Strategy: Merlinus is your convoy. If he is defeated, he retreats, but you lose him for the rest of the game if he's defeated three times. Protect him. Priscilla is a mounted healer, giving her great range. The main challenge is reaching the southern village before pirates destroy it. Use your mounted units (Marcus, Lowen, Sain, Kent) to rush down and secure it.
Chapter 16: Whereabouts Unknown
- Objective: Talk to Fiora with Florina
- New Units: Lyn, Sain, Kent, Wil, Florina (all from Lyn's mode), Fiora (Pegasus Knight)
- Recruitment: Talk to Fiora with Florina.
- Strategy: Lyn's group rejoins you! Fiora starts as an enemy Pegasus Knight. You must use Florina to recruit her. This is a foggy port map. Be wary of enemies hiding in the fog. Send a strong group with Florina to the west to recruit Fiora, while your main force pushes north. The chapter ends once the recruitment is complete.
Chapter 16x: The Port of Badon (Side Chapter)
- Requirement: Finish Chapter 16 in 15 turns or fewer.
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- Strategy: This is a fantastic chapter for getting items and experience. There are multiple shops, an arena to grind gold and EXP (be careful, you can lose units permanently in the arena!), and secret items. The goal is to reach the gate at the top. You'll be swarmed by pirates. Hold a defensive line and push forward slowly.
Chapter 17: Pirate Ship
- Objective: Survive for 11 turns
- New Units: Canas (Shaman), Dart (Pirate)
- Recruitment: Canas joins automatically. Dart can be recruited by talking to him with Lyn.
- Strategy: Another survival map, this time on a ship. You'll be attacked from all sides by pirates and pegasus knights. Form a defensive wall. Canas is your first Dark Mage. Dart starts as a powerful enemy; recruiting him is a priority. Use your archers and mages to take down the pegasus knights.
Chapter 18: The Dread Isle
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- New Units: Legault (Thief)
- Recruitment: Talk to Legault with Eliwood or Lyn.
- Strategy: A huge, foggy map. Legault is an enemy Thief who will try to escape. He won't attack you. Rush Eliwood or Lyn forward to recruit him before he leaves. There are many powerful enemies hidden in the fog. Advance cautiously. The boss, Uhai, is a formidable Nomad Trooper. He's fast and strong. Use high-defense units to bait him and then counter-attack with everything you have.
Chapter 19: Dragon's Gate
- Objective: Defeat all enemies
- New Units: Ninian (Dancer)
- Strategy: Ninian is a Dancer, functionally identical to Nils the Bard. Her ability to grant extra turns is invaluable. This map features shifting walls that open and close new paths. You must be adaptable. The map is filled with powerful magic users and armored knights. A balanced team is essential. Hector and Oswin are great for the knights, while your fast sword-users and mages can handle the sorcerers.
Chapter 20: New Resolve
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- New Units: Isadora (Paladin), Rath (from Lyn's mode), Heath (Wyvern Rider)
- Recruitment: Isadora and Rath join automatically. Talk to Heath with Eliwood, Lyn, or Hector.
- Strategy: This map is a race against time. The green NPC knights will be slaughtered if you don't move quickly. Heath is an enemy Wyvern Rider you can recruit. Send a lord with a rescue-flier to quickly reach him. The boss, Oleg, is not particularly threatening. The main challenge is protecting the green units.
Chapter 21: Kinship's Bond
- Objective: Protect Nils (now Ninian) for 11 turns
- New Units: Hawkeye (Berserker)
- Recruitment: Hawkeye joins automatically on turn 3.
- Strategy: Another defense map. You must protect Ninian, who cannot fight back. Form a perimeter around her. Hawkeye appears from the desert to help. He's a powerful pre-promoted Berserker. This map is a desert, which severely restricts the movement of most units. Fliers and magic users are your best friends here. There are also hidden items buried in the sand; use your Thieves (Matthew, Legault) to find them.
Chapter 22: Living Legend
- Objective: Seize the Throne
- New Units: Pent (Sage), Louise (Sniper)
- Strategy: Pent and Louise start as "Other" (green) units and are incredibly powerful. They will likely clear half the map on their own before you can even reach them. They become controllable on turn 6. Your job is to move up and support them. The boss, Paul, is no match for Pent's magic. This is a great chapter to focus on leveling your weaker units while Pent handles the heavy lifting.
Chapter 23: Four-Fanged Offense
- Objective: Defend the area around Marcus for 11 turns OR defeat the two bosses, Lloyd and Linus.
- New Units: Wallace (from Lyn's mode)
- Strategy: This is one of the most famous maps in the game. You'll be assaulted from all directions. The boss you face depends on the total level of your lords. If their combined level is 50 or more, you face Linus. If it's 49 or less, you face Lloyd.
- Defense Strategy: Turtle up. Form a tight formation in the center of the map and let the enemies come to you. This is the safer option.
- Offense Strategy: Split your forces and rush both bosses. This is risky but ends the chapter much faster. Bring your strongest units and use Ninian/Nils to get them into position quickly.
Chapter 24: Unfulfilled Heart
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- New Units: Geitz (Warrior) OR Wallace (General)
- Recruitment:
- Geitz: If the total level of your lords (Eliwood, Lyn, Hector) is 50 or more, Geitz appears. Recruit him by talking to him with Dart.
- Wallace: If the lords' total level is 49 or less, Wallace appears. Recruit him by talking to him with Lyn, Sain, Kent, or Florina.
- Strategy: A foggy map with rain that can turn to snow, further reducing visibility and movement. Move carefully as a group. The recruitable unit is in the northeast. Send a small, fast group to recruit them while your main army advances north.
Chapter 25: Pale Flower of Darkness
- Objective: Seize the Throne
- New Units: Farina (Pegasus Knight)
- Recruitment: Farina appears if you are playing Hector's mode. In Eliwood's mode, this chapter features a different boss. We'll stick to Eliwood's version here.
- Strategy (Eliwood Mode): You face Sonia in a magic-heavy fortress. The map is filled with powerful Sages and Bishops. High-resistance units like Lucius, Canas, and Pent are invaluable. The boss, Sonia, has powerful Bolting magic that can strike from a huge distance. Bait her shots with a high-resistance unit, then rush her once she has used up her tome.
Chapter 26: Battle Before Dawn
- Objective: Protect Zephiel for 15 turns
- New Units: Nino (Mage), Jaffar (Assassin)
- Recruitment: Talk to Nino with Eliwood or Lyn. After recruiting Nino, talk to Jaffar with Nino.
- Strategy: This is arguably the hardest chapter in the game. You start split up in a mansion. Zephiel, the prince you must protect, is in a separate room with Jaffar. Powerful enemies will constantly spawn and rush Zephiel.
- Immediate Priority: Use a flyer with a rescued lord to rush towards Nino and recruit her. Then, use Nino to recruit Jaffar.
- Defense: Send your strongest units (Hector, Oswin, Marcus) to block the hallways leading to Zephiel. Use healers to keep them alive. The boss, Ursula, is a powerful Sage with Bolting. Be very careful of her range.
Chapter 26x: Night of Farewells (Side Chapter)
- Requirement: Recruit Jaffar and Nino, and keep both alive through Chapter 26.
- Objective: Defeat all enemies
- Strategy: A relatively straightforward "kill boss" map. It's a good opportunity to level up Nino and Jaffar. The enemies are strong, but the map layout is simple.
Chapter 27: Cog of Destiny
- Objective: Defeat all enemies
- New Units: Vaida (Wyvern Lord)
- Recruitment: Talk to Vaida with Eliwood.
- Strategy: A large, open map with snow that hinders movement. You're up against the remnants of the Black Fang. Vaida starts as a powerful enemy boss. Do NOT try to fight her. She is unkillable due to her spear. Survive her initial onslaught. After a few turns, she will leave the map. She can be recruited in a later chapter. The real boss is Lloyd or Linus (whichever one you didn't fight in Chapter 23). They are incredibly powerful. Lure them out and use your strongest units to take them down.
Chapter 28: Valorous Roland
- Objective: Obtain the Durandal
- New Units: None
- Strategy: This map is a puzzle. You need to stand on specific switches to open the path to the throne room where the legendary weapon Durandal is. The map is filled with powerful morphs. Splitting up is necessary, so make sure each group has a healer.
Chapter 29: Sands of Time
- Objective: Defeat the two bosses
- New Units: None
- Strategy: Another desert map with hidden treasures. Bring your thieves! You have to defeat two bosses, Denning and his morphs. They are powerful but not too difficult to handle if you approach them with your main force. The sand will slow you down, so plan your movements carefully.
Chapter 30: Victory or Death
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- New Units: Renault (Bishop)
- Recruitment: Visit the northern village with any unit.
- Strategy: This is a massive "defend the castle" map where you are the attacker. You are given a large number of allied "knights of Lycia" who will charge in and likely die. You can use them as fodder or try to save them. The map is swarming with powerful enemies. The boss, Limstella, is a Sage with devastating magic. Approach her carefully and take her down with a combined assault. Fire Emblem promotion is key here; you should have a strong team of promoted units by now. Use them to break through the enemy lines.
Final Chapter: Light
- Objective: Defeat the final boss
- New Units: Athos (Archsage)
- Strategy: This is it. Athos joins you, a legendary hero who is immensely powerful. The first part of the map requires you to defeat past bosses revived as morphs. They are strong, but you've beaten them before. Use Athos and your legendary weapons (Durandal, Armads, Sol Katti) to make quick work of them.
- The Fire Dragon: The final boss is a massive Fire Dragon. It has three attack ranges:
- 1-range: A powerful physical bite.
- 1-2 range: A magical flame attack.
- 1-3 range: Another magical flame attack.
- Its attacks ignore defense and resistance, dealing pure damage. The only way to survive is with high HP. Use your strongest units, Athos, and your lords with their legendary weapons. Use Ninian/Nils to allow your heaviest hitters to attack twice per turn. Keep your healers safe but busy. It's a battle of attrition. Pummel the dragon until it falls.
Congratulations, you have completed the Fire Emblem Blazing Blade walkthrough for Eliwood's Tale!
Part 3: Hector's Tale
Hector's Tale follows the same main story as Eliwood's but with key differences. The difficulty is higher, enemy stats are inflated, and there are several new chapters and two new characters.
Key Differences in Hector's Tale:
- New Chapters: Chapters 11, 19x, 25, and 32x are unique to Hector's mode.
- New Characters: Farina (Pegasus Knight) and Karla (Swordmaster) can only be recruited in Hector's mode.
- Increased Difficulty: Enemies are stronger, more numerous, and have better equipment.
Hector Mode Exclusive Chapters & Recruitment
Chapter 11: Another Journey
- This chapter replaces Eliwood's Chapter 11. It's a defense map where Hector and Oswin must protect a wounded Eliwood. Matthew joins you here. It's a tough early-game chapter that forces you to play defensively.
Chapter 19x: A Glimpse in Time (Side Chapter)
- Requirement: Finish Chapter 19 with Nils at level 7 or higher.
- Objective: Seize the Gate
- Strategy: A straightforward chapter that provides more backstory on the Scouring. It's not particularly difficult but offers good experience.
Chapter 25: Crazed Beast
- This chapter replaces Eliwood's Chapter 25. Instead of Sonia, you face Kishuna, a "Magic Seal" who nullifies all magic within a 10-tile radius. This forces you to rely entirely on your physical units. It's a unique and challenging map.
Chapter 31: Battle Preparations
- This is a unique chapter where you can simply visit shops and prepare your army for the final battles. There is no combat.
Chapter 32x: The Value of Life (Side Chapter)
- Requirement: In Chapter 31 (Hector Mode), have a promoted Lord or a total army value over a certain threshold (it's complex, but promoting units helps).
- Objective: Defeat Kishuna
- Strategy: A very difficult map where you must defeat Kishuna, who will warp around the map and summon powerful morphs. He will eventually flee, so you need to defeat him quickly. This chapter is required to unlock the "true" final boss of the game.
New Character Recruitment
- Farina (Pegasus Knight): Appears in Chapter 25 (Hector Mode). She will fly to Hector and demand 20,000 Gold to join. If you pay her, she's yours. She is the sister of Fiora and Florina and has excellent Fire Emblem growth rates.
- Karla (Swordmaster): Appears in Chapter 31x (Hector Mode). To recruit her, you must first have recruited Bartre and leveled him to a Level 5 Warrior. Then, deploy Bartre in Chapter 31x. Karla will appear in the arena. Send Bartre to the arena, and he will duel her. If he survives the duel, she will join you. She is one of the hardest characters to recruit in the series.
The final battle in Hector's mode can also be different. If you completed Chapter 32x, you will face an additional, even more powerful final boss after the Fire Dragon. Be prepared!
